  • We talked about the Race films being a 3 part series since they are almost one hour long each.
  • No one knew what "Traces of the Trade" was-if we want to do it it would be 4th in the Race series.
  • We were unclear about the Insurance class. How did the idea come about?
  • Question about the Clarence Darrow/Mark Twain performance came up. We though it might be good for the spring '08.
  • No one knew Wendy Ford or wanted to pursue Needlepoint. Will check with Florence.
  • We did suggest that Harold might want to do the Spiritual Autobiography class in the fall.

Present: Abigail Bottome, Leslie Lipkind, Florence Mercer

The Committee approved the minutes of the August 22 meeting.

We received 15 responses to the 2006 Congregation Interest Survey. The big vote getters were social issues, world religions, and in a three-way tie, spirituality, UUs, world events. We decided to wait a few years before doing this again. Thanks to Leslie & Abigail for distributing the surveys and picking up the results.

The fall programs are going well except for the Comfort Shawl program. Maybe Linda will get more people on Nov. 1. We decided to postpone the Singles program until the Spring because the Vision committee has an event on the same day we were going to have the program.

Minutes of Adult Education Meeting, May 24, 2006

Attending: Florence, Leslie, Harold (briefly)

New members: Leslie will ask three people and Florence will ask Harold for likely new members

Harold decided to do a course next fall on Transcendalism meeting Oct. 26, Nov. 2, 9, 16 from 6 to 7:15.

Decided to ask Catherine to choose an interesting film, "What the Bleep" does not interest half the committee.

Possible program: Modern American Religions (7th Day Adventists, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Greek Orthodox, Unity, Alliance, etc). Harold suggested Diana Eck’s book on American religions (has only Christianity, Islam, & Hinduism).

Fastest meeting on record.

Minutes of Adult Education Meeting, April 19, 2006 Present: Florence, Harold, Julie, Leslie

We reported on the Celia Thaxter event, America's Heart & Soul, and the UU Parenting course. The Thaxter event was very successful, we had 65 people. Few people came to the film, we are not sure why. Harold & Julie's parenting course has only two or three attendees. The issue seems to be babysitting, or just time away from the family. We are not sure.

The Roots class was very successful, so successful in fact that the participants want to continue meeting once a month on the 4th Tuesday as "Spiritual Literacy." They are currently reading 'The Book of Job.' The Retirement class led by Alex Mezey is meeting Wednesday mornings and has 8 attendees.

In June Harold will ask Bill Graham of the Divinity School if he will lead a workshop on Islamic Fundamentalism in the fall. He has so few after church Sundays left before the end of the church season that he will pick a date in the fall for the Singles meeting. Harold will lead the Ethics course, but in the Spring after he comes back from Transylvania. This fall he will lead a three-session course on the book of his choice.

Florence had not yet talked to Linda Buddenhagen about the Comfort Shawl Workshop. She did contact Katherine Wysong, a nurse at AJH, about leading a two-session workshop on living wills, five wishes, and advance directives. Katherine is going to send some dates she would be available.

Harold said that the Beverly UU minister, Sylvia Howe, might be willing to teach "Developing Leadership Skills" at our church. Florence will call her.

Ben Labaree will lead a follow-up session for people attending his Newburyport history class on Oct. 19. Then he will lead a four-session course in the mornings starting Oct. 26 called "Right or Wrong: Three Decisions in American History: Concord Bridge, 1775; Fort Sumter, 1861, and Hiroshima, 1945." Perhaps he will teach the Newburyport History in the spring.

James Funston, a Portsmouth UU from Amesbury, has offered to lead a workshop on freemasonry. We urged him to relate it to early American history, including Amesbury & Newburyport. We will offer it in the fall.

With the money left in our budget and the money we made on the Celia Thaxter event, we will go together with two other committees to buy an LCD projector.

People said they would not want me to be left doing all the work on these adult ed events. So I want committee members to commit to helping with one or two events. We'll talk about it at the next meeting.

The next meeting will be May 24 at 7.

Respectfully submitted,

Florence Mercer

Minutes of Adult Education Meeting, March 22, 2006

Present: Catherine Garnache, Florence Mercer, Leslie Lipkind, MaryAnne Macaulay

Celia Thaxter program 3/26: Leslie away, MaryAnne and Catherine will try to attend to help serve refreshments.

America's Heart & Soul film 4/1: Florence on her own to provide refreshments, all members unable to attend except Marie who will lead discussion after film. Action: Put up flyers in the church, have announcement in church 3/26 and ask John to put this on an email alert.

Singles Programming: Action: Ask Harold to have an initial singles program after church. The program must have content, order and structure. Perhaps it should focus on spirituality, social life, and connection. If our church is a community, why do single people feel uncomfortable in it? Possible future directions for singles in the church are small group ministry, dinner clubs, and community service programs. The group suggested a Habitat for Humanity project, voter registration, IMEC, Red Cross, and Katrina work.

Fall/Winter programs:

  • Fundamentalist Islam
  • Babcock course-ethics?
  • Ben Labaree history course
  • Comfort Shawl Workshop-Linda Buddenhagen
  • Advance directive workshop-someone from AJH?
  • Film: What the Bleep
Action: Ask Harold to see if Islamic scholar from Divinity School would conduct workshop; Ask Harold if he would do the ethics course in the fall; ask Ben Labaree what and when he wants to teach; ask Linda for dates for the workshop; find out if a person from the hospital would run the advance directive workshop.

Action: Florence will look at courses from other churches and come back with a list of suggestions for the next meeting.

There will be two membership preparation meetings, April 9 & 23, after church getting ready for new member Sunday. Action: Harold & John decide what they want to cover in these sessions. Advertise in Biweekly.

Next meeting will be Wednesday April 19 at 7pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Florence Mercer

Minutes of Adult Education Meeting, Feb. 15, 2006

Present: Florence, Leslie, Marie, Catherine, Harold

Walter Power of Finance Committee presented 2006 Canvass goals and asked us to consider being canvassers.

Donna Titus will perform Celia Thaxter on March 26 at 4:00 for $100. We will ask a $5 donation. The committee will help with food for the reception.

Singles Programming: We could have a Circle Dinner for Singles only. Harold could convene a group of singles who would then find their own direction and conduct their own affairs. They could have a film discussion group. Among many issues facing singles are housing, finances, retirement, health, loneliness, and single parenting.

Possible programs for Fall 2006:

  • Workshop on radical Islam (Harold could get an Islamic scholar from the Divinity School)
  • Tom Stites on Jazz (Leslie will ask)
  • Babcock course, perhaps the ethics course
  • Ben Labaree course, he wants to do a different topic
  • Film: What the Bleep
  • Comfort Shawl Workshop with Linda Buddenhagen, 2 sessions
Next meeting, Wednesday March 22 at 7:15pm.

  • Being a UU Parent, March 23-Apr. 13, Thursdays, 7:30-9pm, Harold & Julie
Programs to be fleshed out:
Singles: We discussed various approaches. John provided a list of single people in the church; Florence reported no singles programming on the interconnections database. There is a need for this but we want to have ideas when we get people together. Action: Marie will ask Tom Stites for names of churches that might be doing singles programming.

Film: We decided to show Heart & Soul, an uplifting film, on April 1, at 7pm. We'll have food and discussion. We will show What the Bleep in the fall. Action: Marie to buy or borrow the DVD of Heart & Soul and provide a descriptive paragraph for the catalog.

UU Courses: We will try to have "Ethics, Building Your Own Theology" and "Breaking Free: Women of Spirit at Midlife and Beyond" in the fall. Florence found the teachers guide "Breaking Free." Action: Locate teachers for the courses (all on the committee will try).

Knitting: Julie couldn't come to the meeting but explained in an e-mail that she would contact the girls and their mothers asap. Action: Julie to contact the kids & moms to see if they would be interested.

Spring Birding: Leslie reported that the Gettes don't have any weekends available to do a Spring Birding outing.

Celia Thaxter: One woman presentation: Donna Titus has agreed to do this. We suggest a late Sunday afternoon in March. Florence emailed Donna at the last minute and had not heard from her by the time of the meeting. Action: Florence to call Donna for date & description.

Universalism: The Larger Faith: Harold thought he might be able to give this three-week course before the UU Parent course. The Committee felt there was a need to have more information about Universalism, the other half of our church. We tentatively scheduled it for three Thursdays, Feb. 23 to March 9, and in a effort to make this available to Choir members, hold it from 6 to 7:30pm. People would bring dinner with them. Action: Florence to email Harold with this information for his approval.

Jazz and Unitarian Universalism: Tom Stites has agreed to teach this course next fall. Action: Leslie will talk with Tom to set dates & description for fall catalog.

Exploring Unitarian Universalism and FRS Membership: three Sundays, April 9, April 23, April 30, 11:45 a.m. in the Lower Meetinghouse Conference Room

Have you been considering becoming a member of the first religious Society, but wanted to know more about Unitarian Universalism and what it means to be a member of the First Religious Society? Here is your chance! Tom Stites and Alexandra Mezey will discuss the history and philosophy of the church and the Congregationalist model of governance. Meet church leaders and Harold Babcock in a small supportive group. New Member Sunday is May 7. Bring your coffee and join in.

This was sent to the participants who so far seem to agree that this change is ok. Since breaking it into separate parts was not very successful we have decided to bring back the three-Sunday course on the Sundays before New Member Sunday. April 16 is not listed because that is Easter.

Email reminders before the course sign-up deadlines: Since John's email reminder about Jazz Vespers was so productive, we decided to ask John to send out a short email just before the deadline to signup for each course. Action: Florence to ask John to send out these emails.

Next Meeting: February 15, 2006

Respectfully submitted,

Florence Mercer

Minutes of Adult Ed. meeting Oct. 19, 2005

Attending: Florence Mercer, Leslie Lipkind, Annie Maurer, Marie Murphy, Josie Seymour, and Katherine Garnache.

We discussed the upcoming Fall programs, including making plans for the hosting of the coffee hour by the Adult Ed committee and the movie, Flight from Death, scheduled for November 5th at 7:30. Both the program on Newbuyport and Harold's Three Prophets of Liberal Religion are fully subscribed. Play-in-a-Day had to be cancelled but will be tried again in February.

Planned winter and spring programs include a presentation on Celia Thaxter by Donna Titus, a Jewish study led by Lucy Lockwood and Larry Constantine, and a program to be determined led by Harold. We discussed whether we should try to develop programs that have a broader appeal, including such things as a quarterly film presentation, a program on goddesses from various tradition, or a program on using herbs. We also determined that we would gook into some of the curricula available from the UUA, including Ethic, Life Tapestry, and Owning Your Religious Past.

The committee will next meet on Wednesday, November 16th and in December on Thursday the 8th.

Minutes of Adult Ed. meeting Oct. 5, 2005

Attending: Florence Mercer, Leslie Lipkind, Annie Mauer, Maryanne Macaulay, Harold Babcock, Marie Murphy

We met briefly to respond to Vicki Dyer's suggestion that we spread our brochure out in the community. Florence reported that she had sent information about Plays in a Day to the local newspaper at the behest of Nancy Herbison-Evans.

While discussing the pros & cons of advertising various programs, Marie said it would make a welcoming statement to have our brochures out in the community. Everyone agreed so we all took brochures for spots we had in mind.

Addendum: Florence had thought Vicki would distribute the brochures, but that turned out not to be the case. One person did respond to the newspaper story of Plays in a Day, but didn't call and didn't find out it had been cancelled.

Minutes of Adult Ed. meeting Sept. 1, 2005

Attending: Florence Mercer, Leslie Lipkind, Catherine Garnache, Marie Murphy, Alex Mezey

Adult Religious Education Fall Brochure. We went over the brochure with a fine tooth comb and made many changes. We suggested registration forms for the brochure. Florence agreed to make changes the committee wanted and to get the copy to Marie Murphy for final editing. Vicki Dyer was to make 150 copies which were to be distributed in various spots around the church and parish hall as well as in the pews. We decided to try to renew the pew supply every week.

Alex spoke briefly about the basic adult religious education curriculum. The consensus was that we would work on implementing it incrementally.

We decided to split up the "Exploring UU" class that had met for three weeks before New Member Sunday. Tom Stites will lead "Exploring Unitarian Universalism" the first Sunday of every month. Harold will host "Meet the Minister" Oct. 23, Nov. 20, and Dec. 18. John Mercer will lead "Introduction to First Religious Society Membership" Sunday Nov. 6, the week before New Member Sunday.

We decided to have name tags at the programs so people could get to know one another.

Minutes of Adult Ed Meeting, Aug. 4, 2005

Attending were Florence Mercer, Leslie Lipkind, Marie Murphy, and Alex Mezey.

We talked about "Take Back Your Time" and agreed that we haven't enough time to really prepare to do the program properly but will ask Harold to mention it during announcements.

Florence will ask Amy Pollard to do a workshop on "Voluntary Simplicity" for the spring series.

We discussed getting out information on our programs using a List Serv, but decided not to do it.

Forum topics will be announced in a box on the Web Site.

Vicki will also tell people the forum topic and the current book being discussed. This means the facilitators giving her the info.

The brochure will be divided into Ongoing Programs which require no registration and New Programs which will require registration.

Florence will ask Kathy Kondylis if she will be the facilitator for "Play in a Day."

Florence received Catherine Garnache's description of the film program on fear of death.

We discussed the possibility of a singles' group. Marie agreed to work on it.

Florence was also to call Donna Titus (Celia Thaxter impersonation), Lucy Lockwood & Larry Constantine (Jewish study), and Susan Mikesell (Women in Transition).

Minutes of Adult Education Meeting -- Feb. 16, 2005

Present: Florence, Leslie, Stan and Harold

The minutes of 11/30 and 12/14 were not available so we will review them at the next meeting. ACTION: Anne will bring the 11/30 & 12/14 minutes to the next meeting.

Not enough people signed up for Meditation so we cancelled it. ACTION: Florence schedule Chris Morton for an educational evening in April introducing her meditation experience.

Attendance has increased this year. The FRS church history had 18, Buddhism had 32, Understanding the Bible has around 20, and 9 have currently signed up for the Japanese Tea Ceremony. People expressed the need for evaluations which would include suggestions for other programs. ACTION: Leslie will send an old evaluation she has to Florence to be reworked into our Adult Ed evaluation tool.

"Spring Birding on Plum Island" will be held on Sunday, May 8, from 7am to 9:30am. This gives people time to get to church. Bill Gette usually charges $12 for this program, but he will only charge us $10. He is expecting about 20 adult participants. Leslie Lipkind has made all the arrangements. ACTION: Florence will ask Judy Murphy for flyers & sign-ups, and will put an announcement in the Steeple BiWeekly starting in April to advertise the outing.

Harold's tour of UU historical spots will be May 21 with June 4 as back-up. He will include Harvard Divinity Hall Chapel, Mt. Auburn cemetery with stops at the graves of famous UUs, Walden Pond, Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and the Battle Ground in Concord. ACTION: Florence will ask Judy Murphy for flyers & sign-ups, and will put an announcement in the Steeple BiWeekly starting in April to advertise the outing.

Alex Mezy & Tom Stites plan to do the Exploring UU course again April 10, 17, and 24. John & Harold will run the April 17 session since Alex & Tom will be away. ACTION: Remind Alex & Tom to assign topics to Harold & John.

Fall programs will include Play in a Day, Death & dying film and discussion, and the community speaker program run by Stan Kilty. ACTION: Ask other people if they want to do courses in the fall: Kathy Kondylas (whales), Alex Mezy (retirement), Sandra Thaxter (Hiroshima survivors), Ben Labaree (Newburyport history).

Stan Kilty reported that he needs $2,000 from next year's budget: 2 speakers at $150, 2 speakers at $500, transportation and accommodations at $700. This year's budget is $400, so we will request $2400 from the budget for next year.

A committee member reminded us that the Adult Ed brochure needs to be updated again for the spring courses. ACTION: Florence tell Julie changes needed in the brochure.

Florence urged the committee to become canvassers and to support the Auction April 9.

Our 2005-6 goals will be 1) Map current curriculum, 2) Offer new programs, and 3) attract new members to programs and to the committee. Harold suggested asking a new church person who has shown interest in the committee to the next meeting. ACTION: Florence ask Marie Murphy to come to our next committee meeting.

Florence put out the idea of getting a co-chair, but had no takers.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, March 16. Please call Florence if you cannot attend.

Respectfully submitted,

Florence Mercer, Chair

Nancy Herbison-Evans ( for Annie Maurer)

Meeting of September 21, 2004

Attending: Florence Mercer, Harold Babcock, Nancy Herbison-Evans, Julie Parker-Amory, Josie Seymour, and Annie Maurer

The notes from August 17th were reviewed.

Some of the programs are up and running or due to begin. The Stiteses have agreed to do the UU class. Knitting with Eileen is meeting on Saturday mornings. Gentle Stretching for Seniors is ready to go but needs to be scheduled. Richard Nosara will be the facilitator for the Current Affairs Forum which will continue to meet the first and third Sundays of the month. The Open Book club will start in October and Annie and Nancy will run it.

We have the survey results but Florence is still looking at some that came it late.

  • In the surveys looked at, Meditation and the film series were responded to most positively. Anita Wright might help with the film series, the one she worked on this summer was very successful. People are definitely interested in both learning about meditation and practicing it. There are lots of people around who do…it was suggested that Florence ask Nancy McCarthy if she knows someone when she talks to here about the Gently Stretching.

  • Bettina Turner is interested in trying to do the drum and chant program again.

  • Sandra Thaxter is interested in doing a program on the survivors of Hiroshima.

  • Josie would like to look into the possibilities of stating a UU run place for over 60's to go to live. Florence suggested sending a notice to John to put in the Weekly to see what the response it.

  • The shared ministry will start early in October. There are enough leaders available for 3 - 5 groups. The groups will be eight or fewer and will meet whenever the individual group decides. At this point there are enough people signed up to make 3 groups. People will need to commit for six months. It is not a part of the Adult Ed program but its own thing.

  • Stan is still in Nantucket but will report back on the community lecture idea when he gets back.

  • We definitely want to do Play in a Day again but need to be organized and get the word out sooner.

  • Would Bert and Maxine be willing to do a FRS history class?

  • Florence will call Linda about getting her son to do a program on Bhuddism.

  • Harold is interested in dong a Understanding the Bible course but is having trouble finding time. He will probably do it in late winter, possible the end of February. He may do a three-week discussion on a book on Friday mornings this fall. He'll let Florence know when he decides.

  • Florence would like to see the Writing Your Spiritual Biography done again, but not until next year.

  • We would like to set up a kayaking trip again next spring.
October 3rd is the committee fair. Nancy and Josie will bring food for the table and Florence will man it.

Nancy suggested adding a section of proposed programs on the back of the brochure to drum up interest in programs. Josie suggested asking for people's ideas at the same time.

Florence will email John to make sure info about upcoming events is in the Steeple Weekly. It was decided to keep the committee's goals the same as last year with some minor changes in wording. They will need to be presented at the next parish council meeting.

Josie will call Leslie Powell about when she wants to set up the Play in a Day.

Florence is going to make it possible for people to e-mail or phone to sign up for programs rather than just have a sign up sheet.

Proposed meeting dates for upcoming meetings: Oct. 27; Nov. 30; Dec. 14; Jan. 26. Future meetings will be at 7:30.

Minutes -- August 18, 2004

Attending: Florence Mercer, Nancy Herbison-Evans, Stan Kilty, Annie Maurer, and Leslie Lipkind

After settling in and greeting each other, Nancy gave Florence her materials from last year and there was a short discussion of last year's programs. It was decided to do the Adult Ed survey on the first Sunday and to repeat it on the second Sunday. We will also check and see if the survey can be put up on the Steeple Weekly website so people can reply that way. Leslie and Annie will pass the surveys out on the 12th.

The fall programs were discussed:

  • The FRS Current Events forum will continue on the first and third Sundays of the month from 9:30 to 10:15. We will also look for a facilitator, possible Richard N or Walter M.
  • Florence will call the Stiteses to see if they would be willing to do the Exploring Unitarianism/Universalism class.
  • Annie will contact Liss about the Open Book Club to see if she still wants to run it.
  • Florence will call about the Knitting with Eileen group on Saturday mornings.
  • Nancy is willing to continue to run the Friday morning Study and Discussion group.
  • Stan will contact Nancy about the schedule for Gentle Stretching for Seniors.
  • Florence will call to find out about the Men Can Read Too book group.
Other new programs were suggested:
  • Does Harold have in mind anything he'd like to do? Wait until he's back from vacation to ask.
  • Stan will talk to the people in Nantucket when he's down there about their community lecture series. That might be an interesting thing to try up here and would bring about more community involvement.
  • How about repeating the film about the Iraq war that the Social Action committee showed?
  • How about a film series with discussion that showed films with religious or moral themes? Perhaps in winter or early spring.
  • Definitely repeat Play-in-a-Day, but make sure we have more lead time to get people involved.
  • Plan a kayaking trip in spring.
  • Talk to Bill Gette at the Audubon Center about their programs.
  • Would people be interested in three or four sessions on the FRS church history? We could use the Revels video to kick it off.
  • Perhaps an Understanding the Bible course would be interesting. Would Harold be willing to run it?
  • We should check the Religious Education for Adults books flyer for more suggestions.
  • Linda Buddenhagen's son might be interested in presenting a program on Buddhism.
The next meeting will be on Sept. 21 at 7:15. After that we will meet on the third Wednesday of the month.
Minutes -- March 24, 2004

Minutes #1

In attendance: Nancy Herbison-Evans and Annie Maurer

We reviewed the agenda and caught up on what had happened in the last month. Two planned programs did not take place (Meet the Author Night and Music Improvisation) due to either a lack of people signing up or problems publicizing and organizing. We discussed how we could more effectively plan for events. Alex Mezey and Tom Stites will be coordinators for the second Exploring UU workshop. a notice in next weeks order of service and a mention from the pulpit will be needed to let people know it is happening. There have been some sign-ups for the Play in a Day workshop; once again, getting it into the weekly order of service and to have it announced from the pulpit are important. These should be done at the beginning of April. Gentle Stretching for Seniors is going to be extended and both discussion groups are going well. The Open Book Club continues to meet.

We will need to begin advertising Harold's field trip and the Boston Libraries Tour with announcements and sign-up sheets for May.

Annie will call Plum Island Kayak and talk to them about setting up a kayaking tour of the island for some time this spring. She will try to find out what individual as well as package prices are and report back to Nancy.

Minutes #2

(This meeting on this date as our usual time last week was postponed)

1.) brief check-in and touch base

2.) It is a regret that two items on our program were cancelled but it was unavoidable. Meet the Author Night did not happen because I could not rally any assistance with the logistics of putting on the supper.

3.) Bettina Turner's Music Improvisation workshop did not happen because not enough people signed -up for it The foot work for this event -e.g. Getting out with a sign up sheet two weeks before at Sunday morning coffee hour, didn't happen as it was right in the middle of the time that I was unable to be at church because of a family crisis and I did not communicate the need for this to Bettina . This event did have good advance notice in the Steeple Weekly and it had a poster on our B. board well in advance and of course it was listed in our printed program still there was low response. ACTION These problems focus on our need for a stronger communication network for our program. I have already spoken with John Mercer about our needs and concerns in this regard and we have agreed to meet each month on the day following our committee meeting to inform him of any new events which he can then ' Flag' in the 'steeple'. We must try to do better publicizing and promoting the rest of the program this year and chalk these matters up to 'learning as we go'.

4.) EXPLORING U U I have arranged for Alex Mezey and Tom Stites to act as co-ordinators for this our second series. They will consult with H. Babcock and J. Mercer about participating. ACTION NEEDED: alert Vicki and or John to include a notice in next week's church order of service printed notices. Ask Harold to mention it in his remarks re: notices also get a poster up on B.b. for this event.

5.) Play-in-a-Day Workshop ACTION NEEDED need to speak with Leslie Powell about a possible meeting to be held for interested parties with her to gain an overview of what this event is all about. To be arranged about 10 days before the event - need to get out a good poster and sign up sheet (a sign up sheet has already appeared on our B.B. and some have signed) speak to Vicki re newspaper advertising and other promotional venues. Ask John M. to re feature this event in the next Steeple one member of this committee needed to appear on Friday April 23 to collect participants' donations (ask Leslie about performance tickets and be prepared to help sell them perhaps before the Saturday event and at the door on the night.

6.) OTHER ON GOING EVENTS 1st and 3rd Sunday Current Events Forum going well next gathering April 4th subject: what do we know about Islam? ACTION (This is Palm Sunday and also Daylight Saving Sunday (ask J. Mercer to mention this in next Steeple and alert people that 9.30 am will seem very early that morning) subject for the meeting on April 18th will be decided at our next meeting. GENTLE STRECHING FOR SENIORS HAS BEEN EXTENDED for a further 4-week session and runs until April 8th. It cost $20.00 for full course. ACTION Ask for John to mention this in next steeple and encourage others to join in. Get a notice of this extension up on B.B. Although there was a hiatus because I was unavailable to lead the Friday Morning Study Discussion Group, they met any way and this lively talkfest will continue for the rest of the year. ACTION: Ask J. Mercer to mention that this group is meeting regularly on Fridays at 10 am.

7.) The open book group all is going well Action: gets a poster on the two bulletin boards Adult. Ed. And the one outside the church office listing our remaining schedule and the list of books ask Vicki to include this groups' meeting each Sunday before their meeting day 3rd Wednesday of each month

8.) For May -- action next month make sure that Harolds' uufield trip is well publicized post a 'feeler poster and sign -up sheet for both a Boston Libraries Tour and Plum Island Kayak Tour

9.) Be prepared to discuss our Annual Report for next meeting and prepare our guestionaire for the church Would like someone to accompany me to the Parish council meeting on April 7th

Meeting of November 20, 2003

In attendance:
Nancy Herbison-Evans
Harold Babcock
Stan Kilty
Annie Maurer
Liss Campbell

1. The committee discussed the Healing Power of Meditation workshop presented by Nancy Taylor. Although the workshop went well, the church administration had decided against letting Dr. Taylor use the space for further workshops on this topic. Reasons given included issues related to tying up the space and her need for the space to be available to her for no charge. The committee recommended that some statement by the church be drafted for use in other situations like this to insure that we are speaking with one voice and that there is no confusion among the people in the church who are dealing with the situation.

2. Two of the activities planned, Nancy Kidd's Grief and Loss workshop and Pamela Herman's tour of the Boston libraries, were cancelled due to lack of people signing up for them. It was felt part of the lack of interest resulted from the confusion around the move into the new space and the lack of a bulletin board to post announcements on. It was decided to offer the workshops again in the spring when things are more settled.

3. It was decided to put Afterwords off for a while, due in part to the planned inception of the before church discussion group.

4. The book club, Emerson study group, and New UU group are all going well.

5. Nancy suggested that the new discussion forum's first meeting focus on the recent UU World article on being a liberal in time of war. She will try to arrange for copies of the article to be available before the meeting, scheduled for Dec. 7, so people can read it before coming. It was suggested that the Dec. 21st meeting focus on the new Gay Marriage ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Court.

6. We decided to meet on December 17th to discuss program planning for the new year. Suggestions of possible activities included:

  • contacting the couple in the church who do theater workshops at the Firehouse.
  • Liss will talk to a yoga teacher she thinks may be interested in offering a workshop.
  • Peter Richardson is coming in March to discuss his book The Boston Religion. We will need to pay him a small honorarium. Nancy suggested that we also have a pot luck dinner that night and charge a small fee ($5.00 or so) for folks who are interested in attending.
7. We need to come up with ways of raising money.
