Yankee Homecoming Sunday Rev. John Burciaga "Home" The Rev. John Burciaga will be our guest minister, while Harold Babcock will be en route to Transylvania. John, with his wife Linda Lu, is a new resident of Newburyport. He has completed nearly 50 years of ministry in Lehigh Valley, PA; Atlanta, GA; Tampa Bay, FL; Washington, DC; and Phoenix, AZ. He begins Interim ministry at the South Church (UU) in Portsmouth, NH, this fall. John also is a professional journalist, having served as editor and columnist for the Alternative Press in Atlanta and Tampa, FL. His sermon for this occasion is titled, appropriately, "Home." Flowers: The flowers for this morning's service are donated by the Dyers in loving memory of Karen Colby Breen. New Member Potluck Picnic: If you've joined the FRS since 2000, come help us explore how to make new members feel welcome. Bring your favorite picnic food and beverage. In the Lower Meetinghouse at 11:30 a.m. Steeple Lighting through the summer
July 31: Rev. Holly Baylies August 7: Rev. Connie Pirnie Sternberg August 14: Rev. Kenneth Clark August 21: Rev. Terry Burke August 28: Rev. Harold Babcock September 4: Rev. Joseph Bassett Services begin at 10:45. The church is located on Route 88, near Applecrest Farms. Parking in the rear of the church. Join us in the air-conditioned Lower Meetinghouse at 7:30 on Wednesday evenings, August 3, 10, 17, and 24, for a series of films exploring issues of gender identity and sexual orientation. This is a developing and freewheeling discussion started by those who attended the workshop conducted by Michael Durall, but open to all. Next meeting: 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 11, in the Lower Meetinghouse. Save Your Water . . . Young Church children are asked to get a small sample of water from someplace their summer travels may take them: a lake, the ocean, a pond, a puddle in the driveway. The water will be used in our annual Young Church water communion service in September, when the waters of our separate journeys are mingled into one bowl. This is a service common to UU congregations across the continent, and has been celebrated in our Young Church for four years. A film canister is an appropriate size. Current Events Forum Are you aware that the Newburyport City Council is considering a proposal to build a 3 1/2 story parking garage on City-owned land directly behind the FRS? Mayor Clancy presented this proposal to the Newburyport City Council on Monday, July 11, 2005. It is the plan recommended by an architectural consulting firm hired by the City to study the parking situation in Newburyport. Since our 200-year-old building is an abutter to the land where this garage is proposed to stand, we all undoubtedly will have opinions about this project. Plan to attend the first Current Events Forum of the new church year at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 18, to become more fully informed about this proposal. BBQ slingers and servers . . . at the FRS sponsored Muddy River BBQ at Yankee Homecoming, all week right here at the church, from Sunday, July 31, through Sunday, August 7. Shifts run variously from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Great fun to be had, and you get paid! Teenagers, Moms, Dads and other helpers needed. No experience necessary. Please contact Vicki at the church office 465-0602. Mark your calendars for August 4, 5, and 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Our Yankee Homecoming Booksale is quickly approaching, so please bring in your gently used books for donation to the sale. We are looking for classics and current titles (both hard and paperback) for children and adults. We will gratefully accept full sets of popular currents magazines (i.e. Gourmet, National Geographic, etc.). CDs are also welcome. Please, no text books. All donations can be dropped off in Classroom 'D' in the Lower Meetinghouse. To volunteer (or if you have difficulty getting your books to church) e-mail Mindy Sheehy at mindysheehy@hotmail.com or Ann Chase at a.chase@verizon.net. Are you bewildered by your computer? Is it operating you more than you it? Fret no more: a bright and charming young man (from the FRS, of course) is willing to give instruction and help you troubleshoot any problems on your home PC. Feel confident with your operating system, e-mail, Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), digital images, and the like. To set up and appointment, just call the FRS office to be connected. Among ourselves: Our condolences to Florence Pearson on the death of her husband, John Sedoric. A celebration of his life will be held at River Woods of Exeter on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, at 4:00 p.m. in the Great Bay Room. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to honor John Sedoric to CASA of New Hampshire, PO Box 1327, Manchester, NH 03105 or Families First of the Seacoast, 100 Campus Drive, Suite 12, Portsmouth, NH 03801. October 7 and 9, 2005 The tenth anniversary celebration will include an evening party on the Friday evening at Steeple Hall at the Kiwi Grille. The evening will feature music and dancing, old stories, and artful oratory, as well as plenty of opportunity to express appreciation. The $30.00 ticket price will include substantial finger food and a copy of Harold's newly published book of sermons from his first ten years at the FRS. The church service and special coffee hour on Sunday, October 9, will be further testimony to our appreciation. As part of the celebration, the congregation will present Harold with a scrapbook of its members' skits, songs, poems, stories, appreciations, and accolades. These should be sent or brought to the church before Monday, September 19. ![]() |
