Up and Coming UUs Sunday This service is the culmination of the year-long mentoring program in which ten of our high school youth have participated this year. Steeple Lighting: The steeple lighting for this week has been donated by Swift and Virginia Barnes in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Swift Barnes, Sr., and Mrs. William Simonds. from the FRS Hospitality Committee We say, eat dessert when you get the chance! Join us on Friday evening, June 16, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. for the first (annual?) Ice Cream n' Cake-a-palooza. We'll be serving homemade cakes of all kinds, brownie sundaes, and root beer floats. Parish Hall: cost, $6.00 for adults, $5 for kids. Harold's letter of agreement with the First Religious Society calls for one month of vacation and one month of on call/study time. Harold will be in St. Louis, MO, from June 20 to June 26 attending the UUA General Assembly. He will return to the office June 28 - 30. He will be performing a wedding here in Newburyport on July 2 and preaching an installation sermon for his colleague in Castine, ME, on July 9. During the remainder of July, he will be on vacation. On July 11 he and Sabrina will be traveling to Portugal for a week. On July 30 he is scheduled to preach at our Yankee Homecoming worship service. Toward the end of August he will be traveling to Minnesota to take part in the 125th anniversary of his first church in Hanska. On August 25 he will be performing a wedding in Ipswich, and on August 27 he will be preaching in Hampton Falls. In between, he may try to fit in a few weekends in Maine. In the event of an emergency (death, accident, or serious illness) during his absences, the church office, which will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon weekdays, will be able to provide ministerial back-up. Both Bert Steeves and Harold Babcock will be preaching in Hampton Falls, NH, this summer, Bert on August 6, and Harold on August 27.
Emmaus Houses One half of the loose plate from June's services will be donated to Emmaus Inc., a non-profit corporation founded in 1985 to provide housing and services to homeless adults and families in Haverhill, MA. Over the past 14 years the agency has grown to become a significant service provider and developer of affordable housing, offering one of the most innovative and comprehensive approaches to homelessness in the country. For more on this fine organization, see www.emmausinc.org/miss-hist.htm.
Thank You! The Young Church social action term has been a great success so far, thanks to the efforts of our volunteers. Many thanks to the following people for working with our kids on these last Sunday mornings of the church year: Peg Nicol, John Lavoie, Ellen Foley Sheehy, Bob Thurlow, Ann Poirier, Wendy Ford, Cecilia Healy, Kelly McNamee, and Celeste Royce.
Volunteer Opportunity -Julie Parker Amery, Director of Religious Education We would like to establish a section of large-print and audio books for our friends who may find it easier to enjoy their reading selections that way. If you have any such items to donate, they would be greatly appreciated. If you have questions or comments, please contact Wendy Ford at wendford@comcast.net, or call the church office at (978) 465-0602. -Wendy Ford It's (Almost) Book Sale Time Again!!!! Our Annual FRS Yankee Homecoming Book Sale is scheduled for August 3rd through 5th, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. To make the sale as stunning a success as it has been for the past two years, we will need lots of volunteers and lots of donations. We are asking for books in good condition as well as specialty magazines if you have complete sets (National Geographic, Gourmet, and the like). CDs are welcome, too. Also, let's try to improve our children's section this year with wonderful books and movies for the young ones. Please bring your gently used donations tot he church office. It will be a great way to help the church and to wrap up your spring cleaning. Last year was tremendous fun. Please join us! For questions or to volunteer your time, please call or e-mail us. -Mindy Sheehy (mindysheehy@hotmail.com), Ann Chase (a.chase@verizon.net) May 31, 2006 New officers were elected.
Bill Heenehan received the Outstanding Church Service Award: For his splendid accomplishments on the canvass for the 2006 - 2007 operating budget, for his strong leadership of the Finance Committee for the past two years, for his reinvention of the FRS's financial and bookkeeping processes, for his leadership of the Renovation Steering Committee and thus his leadership of the renovation, and for his many, many years of devoted service previously to the FRS, we, the Parish Committee of the FRS, have chosen Bill Heenehan to be the recipient of the Award for Outstanding Church Service of 2006. Bill's contributions have fundamentally changed this church: have opened the door on our financial operations, have indeed given us more doors to open, have ultimately opened the door to a bright future for the FRS. While most obvious are Bill's strength of leadership, clarity of thinking, and abundance of energy, we also call to attention his continual adherence to fundamental UU values of openness, inclusion, and equity. The parish voted a budget of $472,239, 11% higher than last year's, $8,686 in deficit with the belief that that deficit will be closed by continued pledging, a year-end surplus, and Yankee-tight grip on expenditures. The parish voted to spend $10,000 from the Bailey fund to replace carpet in the church and approved the hiring of PNC Advisors as endowment fund manager. The Candlelight Choir will host a Mozart Birthday Celebration on Sunday, June 11, at 7:00 p.m. Special guest, internationally acclaimed soprano Jayne West of Amesbury, will sing Exultate Jubilate. Also, Neal Ferreira, tenor, will sing a concert aria, and the Amesbury High School Chorus will sing "La ci darem" from Don Giovanni. The Candlelight Choir will sing the Te Deum. The program will conclude with the combined choirs singing the ethereal "Ave Verum Corpus." Suggested donation: $10. -Frances Burmeister, Director of Church Music Congratulations to Seth Campbell and Isabel Okaya on their participation in "The Parade of the Hominids," a four-act, thirteen-song musical comedy produced by Bruce Menin's class at the Inn Street Montessori School. A picture of Seth is prominently featured in the Newburyport Current article on June 2, describing the program. Congratulations to Justin Turner on receiving the Betty Gillette Music Scholarship from The Newburyport Choral Society (NCS). Each spring NCS awards a $1,000 scholarship to a local secondary school senior planning to major in music in college. Six years ago, the scholarship was named the Betty Gillette Music Scholarship in honor of founding and current member Betty Gillette, who joined NCS during its inaugural season in 1934. For more on this, see www.townonline.com/newburyport/artsLifestyle/view.bg?articleid=503913. Congratulations to Ben Freeman, a former singer in our Young Church and Teen Choirs, on receiving his Eagle Scout award on June 4. Ben is also a 2006 graduate of Pentucket High School. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Betty Gillette, who is recovering from pneumonia at Anna Jaques Hospital. Congratulations to Natalie McClung on receiving one of the two Nock Middle School Peace Prizes sponsored by the Commission for Diversity and Tolerance. Congratulations to Tempa Pagel on her book, Here's the Church, Here's the Steeple, and the article about it in Globe North on May 28, 2006. The article is posted at Boston.com. And congratulations to the following 12th-grade students on their graduation: Cam Archibald, Tess Brady, Alison Chatfield, Meril Cullinan, Jack Dyer, Sara Fix, Zak Hill-Whilton, Mackenzie Mathieu-Busher, Elysia Petras, Stephanie Steeves, and Justin Turner. from Rev. Zsolt, minister of our partner church to Michael Fosburg and Pat Skibbee. Hello, Michael and Pat. We are in the second day of Pentecost. Yesterday I was in four plays to celebrate. My neighbor in Sárd is the oldest minister in all Unitarian churches. He was sick.
