"Certainly there are lots of things in life that money won't buy, but it's very funny - Have you ever tried to buy them without money?" - Ogden Nash
What Does Church Mean to You? For some people, the greatest value of the First Religious Society is being associated with ideals of individual freedom, the use of reason, and profound respect for all people and religious beliefs. For others, it's the terrific Young Church program - a place where their kids are learning UU values and having fun, too. Others treasure the elegant simplicity of our marvelous sanctuary . . . the landmark steeple that defines the Newburyport skyline . . . the sense of place imparted by its 200-year-old history. Others love the great parties. Fellowship is not in short supply here. Others find that the greatest value is the ability to explore their spirituality in a welcoming and supportive environment. The personal value of "our church" is as different as each individual. But defining it precisely isn't really necessary. What is necessary (and maybe not even as hard!) is defining in financial terms the equation between the value we receive and the value we should give. How Much Should I Give? A perennial question asked by members and friends of the church is "What should my pledge be?" Your canvasser will suggest a range, but of course, you should set the level. You might start by recalling your previous pledge and adding a percentage increase representing your dream for what our church should do-and be-now. 2000-01 Financial Goals Financing our programs will require the following contributions to the operating fund. Reaching these goals provides a total of $190,000, representing an approximate 10% increase in our annual pledge total. Given your financial circumstances and your commitment to the church, can you consider the Benefactor or Sustaining level pledge?
