Sunday, December 1, Parish Hall, Soup & Salad at 11:30 am; presentation at noon. When immigrants to the United States apply for asylum, they are not allowed to work for the following six months. How can they survive with no income? For 38 years, RIM, the Refugee Immigration Ministry, has engaged congregations in an interfaith support system for these people. FRSUU was once an integral part of RIM. On December 1, the founder and leader of RIM, the Rev. Dr. Ruth Bersin, will be at FRS to reintroduce our congregation to the meaningful work that they do.
Sunday, January 19, Parish Hall 1st Floor, noon-1pm. Please join the Anti-Racism Initiative team for Justice Sunday after the MLK service! Sanctuary, 7-8pm (in person on 2/3 and 3/31 only) We will be reading Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson Isabel Wilkerson explores how America has been shaped by a caste system that influences people’s lives and behavior and our nation’s fate. Linking the caste systems of America, India, and Nazi Germany, Wilkerson explores eight pillars that underlie caste systems across civilizations, including divine will, bloodlines, stigma, and more. Using riveting stories about people—including Martin Luther King, Jr., baseball’s Satchel Paige, a single father and his toddler son, Wilkerson herself, and many others—she shows the ways that the insidious undertow of caste is experienced every day. She documents how the Nazis studied the racial systems in America to plan their persecution of the Jews. Finally, she points forward to ways America can move beyond the artificial and destructive separations of human divisions, toward hope in our common humanity. In February and March, the FRS Anti-Racism Team will be hosting a congregational-wide read and facilitated discussion of Caste.
